The Promise: Lasting Presence

Opening Hymn: To God Be the Glory

1.  To God be the glory, great things he hath done!
     So loved he the world that he gave us his Son,
     who yielded his life an atonement for sin,
     and opened the lifegate that all may go in.

Refrain:
     Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
     let the earth hear his voice!
     Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
     let the people rejoice!
     O come to the Father thru Jesus the Son,
     and give him the glory, great things he hath done!

2.  O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,
     to every believer the promise of God;
     the vilest offender who truly believes,
     that moment from Jesus a pardon receives.
     (Refrain)

3.  Great things he hath taught us, great things he hath done,
     and great our rejoicing thru Jesus the Son;
     but purer, and higher, and greater will be
     our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see.
     (Refrain)

Invocation
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

Opening Sentences  Psalm 111:10; Psalm 34:9; Psalm 128:1

P The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
C all those who practice it have a good understanding.

P Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints,
C for those who fear Him have no lack!

P Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord,
C who walks in His ways!

Confession and Absolution
P Let us now make confession of our sins to God, our heavenly Father.

C Merciful Father, we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed. Our actions have brought injury to others. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; we have done those things which we ought not to have done. We sincerely repent of our sins. Graciously hear this, our confession, O Lord, and grant us Your grace and forgiveness in Jesus Christ. By the renewing work of the Holy Spirit within us, lead us to amend our sinful lives, that each day we may grow in righteousness and godly living to the glory of Your holy name.

P To each of us, our Lord says “Fear not!” and promises forgiveness, life, and salvation. I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. As you believe, so may it be.

Introit     Ps. 56:3–4, 10–11; antiphon: Ps. 56:13
For you have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling,
that I may walk before God in the light of life.

When I am afraid,
I put my trust in you.

In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.
What can flesh do to me?

In God, whose word I praise,
in the Lord, whose word I praise,

in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.
What can man do to me?

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be forever. Amen.

For you have delivered my soul from death, yes, my feet from falling,
that I may walk before God in the light of life.

Hymn of Praise:   Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee
1.  Joyful, joyful, we adore thee,
     God of glory, Lord of love;
     hearts unfold like flowers before thee,
     opening to the sun above.
     Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;
     drive the dark of doubt away.
     Giver of immortal gladness,
     fill us with the light of day!

2.  All thy works with joy surround thee,
     earth and heaven reflect thy rays,
     stars and angels sing around thee,
     center of unbroken praise.
     Field and forest, vale and mountain,
     flowery meadow, flashing sea,
     chanting bird and flowing fountain,
     call us to rejoice in thee.

3.  Thou art giving and forgiving,
     ever blessing, ever blest,
     well-spring of the joy of living,
     ocean depth of happy rest!
     Thou our Father, Christ our brother,
     all who live in love are thine;
     teach us how to love each other,
     lift us to the joy divine.

4.  Mortals, join the mighty chorus
     which the morning stars began;
     love divine is reigning o'er us,
     binding all within its span.
     Ever singing, march we onward,
     victors in the midst of strife;
     joyful music leads us sunward,
     in the triumph song of life.

Salutation
P The Lord be with you.
C And also with you.

P Let us pray.

Prayer of the Day
P O God, because Your abiding presence always goes with us, keep us aware of Your daily mercies that we may live secure and content in Your eternal love; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C Amen.

Old Testament Reading  Jeremiah 20:7–13
7 O LORD, you have deceived me,
and I was deceived;
you are stronger than I,
and you have prevailed.
I have become a laughingstock all the day;
everyone mocks me.
8 For whenever I speak, I cry out,
I shout, “Violence and destruction!”
For the word of the LORD has become for me
a reproach and derision all day long.
9 If I say, “I will not mention him,
or speak any more in his name,”
there is in my heart as it were a burning fire
shut up in my bones,
and I am weary with holding it in,
and I cannot.
10 For I hear many whispering.
Terror is on every side!
“Denounce him! Let us denounce him!”
say all my close friends,
watching for my fall.
“Perhaps he will be deceived;
then we can overcome him
and take our revenge on him.”
11 But the LORD is with me as a dread warrior;
therefore my persecutors will stumble;
they will not overcome me.
They will be greatly shamed,
for they will not succeed.
Their eternal dishonor
will never be forgotten.
12 O LORD of hosts, who tests the righteous,
who sees the heart and the mind,
let me see your vengeance upon them,
for to you have I committed my cause.
13 Sing to the LORD;
praise the LORD!
For he has delivered the life of the needy
from the hand of evildoers.

L This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Psalm   Psalm 91:1–10 (antiphon: v. 1)
1He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
2I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
3For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence.
4He will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
5You will not fear the terror of the night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
6nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.
7A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8You will only look with your eyes
and see the recompense of the wicked.
9Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place—
the Most High, who is my refuge—
10no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
no plague come near your tent.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be forever. Amen.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

Epistle   Romans 6:12–23
12Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. 13Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
15What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, 18and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. 19I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.
20When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those things is death. 22But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. 23For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel   Matthew 10:5a, 21-33
P    The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 10th. chapter.
C    Glory to You, O Lord.
5These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, . . . .“

21“Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death,
22and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 23When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
24“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.
26“So have no fear of them, for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. 28And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 33but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.

P
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C    Praise to You, O Christ.

Children's Message

Hymn of the Day       Rock of Ages
1.         Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
            let me hide myself in thee;
            let the water and the blood,
            from thy wounded side which flowed,
            be of sin the double cure;
            save from wrath and make me pure.

2.         Not the labors of my hands
            can fulfill thy law's commands;
            could my zeal no respite know,
            could my tears forever flow,
            all for sin could not atone;
            thou must save, and thou alone.

3.         Nothing in my hand I bring,
            simply to the cross I cling;
            naked, come to thee for dress;
            helpless, look to thee for grace;
            foul, I to the fountain fly;
            wash me, Savior, or I die.

4.         While I draw this fleeting breath,
            when mine eyes shall close in death,
            when I soar to worlds unknown,
            see thee on thy judgment throne,
            Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
            let me hide myself in thee.

Sermon
Nicene Creed
C I believe in one God,
     the Father Almighty,
     maker of heaven and earth
          and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
   the only-begotten Son of God,
   begotten of His Father before all worlds,
   God of God, Light of Light,
   very God of very God,
   begotten, not made,
   being of one substance with the Father,
   by whom all things were made;
   who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
   and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
   and was made man;
   and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
   He suffered and was buried.
   And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
        and ascended into heaven
   and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,
     whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit,
     the Lord and giver of life,
     who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
     who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
     who spoke by the prophets.
     And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
     I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
     and I look for the resurrection of the dead
     and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

Offering    Give Thanks

Give thanks with a grateful heart,
Give thanks to the Holy One,
Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ His Son.
Give thanks with a grateful heart,
Give thanks to the Holy One,
Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ His Son.
And now let the weak say “I am strong,”
Let the poor say “I am rich,”
Because of what the Lord has done for us.
And now let the weak say “I am strong,”
Let the poor say “I am rich,”
Because of what the Lord has done for us.
Give thanks, give thanks

Prayer of the Church
P As dear children ask their dear Father, let us bring to the Lord our prayers this day, knowing that He will hear us and respond to our petitions. Confidently we say,
C Lord, hear our prayer.

P We pray for the world in which we live and for the leaders of every nation, that peace may prevail around the globe and that we may live without fear in our times. Humbly we say,
C Lord, hear our prayer.

P We pray for the Church, that it may grow and flourish even in those places where persecution for our Lord’s sake is known. May the light of the glory of God be reflected in every place. Faithfully we say,
C Lord, hear our prayer.

P We pray for those in need of special petitions, including those who are ill, those dealing with special challenges, the shut-in, the unemployed, and those who grieve this day [including . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .]. According to Your good and gracious will, bring strength to the weak, assurance to the fearful, and hope to those in peril. Securely we say,
C Lord, hear our prayer.

P With gratitude, we remember those whose earthly lives are now complete, including relatives, friends, and members of this household of faith. May we be blessed by the memory of all who have fallen asleep in Jesus as in fearless hope we await the resurrection to life eternal. Thankfully we say,
C Lord, hear our prayer.

Preface to the Lord’s Supper

P The Lord be with you.
C And also with you.

P Lift up your hearts.
C We lift them to the Lord.

P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C It is right to give Him thanks and praise.
P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, because we know that our true security is in You. Grant that we may ever trust in the graciousness of Your plan for our lives and cling to the hope of eternity in Your glorious presence. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

Sanctus (Divine Service, Setting One LSB 161)

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of pow'r and might:
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna. Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest

Prayer of Thanksgiving
P In Your righteous judgment You condemned the sin of Adam and Eve, who ate the forbidden fruit, and You justly barred them and all their children from the tree of life. Yet, in Your great mercy, You promised salvation by a second Adam, Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, and made His cross a life-giving tree for all who trust in Him.

We give You thanks for the redemption You have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may faithfully eat and drink of the fruits of His cross and receive the blessings of forgiveness, life, and salvation that come to us in His body and blood.
C Amen.

The Words of Our Lord
P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

P In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Proclamation of Christ

P As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord's death until He comes.
C Amen.  Come, Lord Jesus.

P O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment.  So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray:

Lord's Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.

The Peace of the Lord
P The peace of the T Lord be with you always.
C Amen.

Distribution Hymns
Lamb of God
Your only Son, no sin to hide,
But You have sent Him from Your side,
To walk upon this guilty sod,
And to become the Lamb of God.

Chorus:   O lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God,
               I love the holy Lamb of God!
              O wash me in His precious blood
              My Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.

Your gift of love, they crucified,
They laughed and scorned Him as He died,
The humble King they named a fraud
And sacrificed the Lamb of God.  Chorus

I was so lost, I should have died,
But You have brought me to Your side,
To be led by Your staff and rod,
And to be called a lamb of God.  Chorus

Just As I Am
1. Just as I am, without one plea,
     but that thy blood was shed for me,
     and that thou bidst me come to
     thee,
     O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

2. Just as I am, and waiting not
     to rid my soul of one dark blot,
     to thee whose blood can cleanse
     each spot,
     O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

3. Just as I am, though tossed about
     with many a conflict, many a doubt,
     fightings and fears within, without,
     O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

4. Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;
     sight, riches, healing of the mind,
     yea, all I need in thee to find,
     O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

5. Just as I am, thou wilt receive,
     wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse,
     relieve;
     because thy promise I believe,
     O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

6. Just as I am, thy love unknown
     hath broken every barrier down;
     now, to be thine, yea thine alone,
     O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Post-Communion Thanksgiving
P Blessed are You, heavenly Father, for You have once again fed and nourished us at Your Table through the body and blood of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Strengthen us through this gracious meal that we may live without fear and confidently show forth Your love through acts of mercy. Support us in this life and bring us at last to the unending feast in Your eternal kingdom, where You live and reign with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C Amen.

Benediction
P But now thus says the Lord . . . “Fear not, for I have redeemed you.”
C “Fear not, for I am with you.”      Isaiah 43:1a, 5a

P Be strong all you people of the land, declares the Lord.
C My Spirit remains in your midst. Fear not.    Haggai 2:4b, 5b

P The Lord bless you and keep you.
The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you.
The Lord look upon you with favor and T give you peace.
C Amen.

Closing Hymn    Great is Thy Faithfulness
Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with Thee,
Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not,
As Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be.

Refrain:  Great is Thy faithfulness!
    Great is Thy faithfulness!
    Morning by morning new mercies I see
    All I have needed Thy hand hath provided
    Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!

Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon, and stars in their courses above;
Join with all nature in manifold witness,
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.  (Refrain)

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own great presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today, and bright hope for tomorrow
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside.  (Refrain)
