11am Creative Worship

AS WE GATHER

We learn much from Peter in today’s Gospel. Initially, Peter seems to understand Jesus. When Jesus asks, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter responds with the right words, “You are the Christ.” Jesus commends him for these right words.
Yet when Jesus began to teach what it meant for Him to be the Christ—suffering, death, resurrection—Peter objected, revealing that he did not really understand what it meant that Jesus was the Christ. So Jesus said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan.”
On this second Sunday in Lent, this episode serves as both a powerful warning and a profound calling to us. Following Jesus is not easy; it is a path of taking up our cross and following Him. And His path went through suffering and death to resurrection. Baptized into Christ, that is our path too, by the grace of the One who walked it first. Ours will, at times, be a path of suffering, and so the words of Paul to the church in Rome ring powerfully in our ears today: “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1).

Opening Sentences   Based on Psalm 115 and Psalm 25:6
P    Remember Your mercy, O Lord, and Your steadfast love.
C    The Lord has remembered us; He will bless us.
P    The Lord is our help and our shield.
C    He will bless those who fear Him, both the small and the great. We will bless the Lord from this time forth and forevermore. Praise the Lord!
Invocation
P    In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C    Amen.

Confession and Absolution  Based on Psalm 51:4; Romans 5:8–9, 11
P    Let us confess our sins to God our Father.
Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean.
C    Against You, O Lord, have we sinned and done what is evil in Your sight.
P    We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone.
C    Against You, O Lord, have we sinned and done what is evil in Your sight.
P    We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
C    Against You, O Lord, have we sinned and done what is evil in Your sight.
P    We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment.
C    Against You, O Lord, have we sinned and done what is evil in Your sight.
P    For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name.
C    Amen.

P    God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by His blood, much more shall we be saved by Him from the wrath of God. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Rejoice then in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
C    Amen.
T WORD T

Introit  Psalm 115:11–13, 18; antiphon: Psalm 25:6
P    Remember Your mercy, O Lord, and Your steadfast love,

C    You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord!
He is their help and their shield.
P    The Lord has remembered us; He will bless us;
He will bless the house of Israel; He will bless the house of Aaron;
C    He will bless those who fear the Lord,
both the small and the great.
P    We will bless the Lord
from this time forth and forevermore. Praise the Lord!
C    Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be forever. Amen.
P    Remember Your mercy, O Lord, and Your steadfast love,
for they have been from of old.

Baptismal Song:  Waves of Grace
                1.  The walls are high
The walls are strong
I've been locked in this castle
That I've built for far too long
You have surrounded me
A sea on ev'ry side
The cracks are forming
And I've got nowhere to hide

Chorus:
Now I see
The walls I've built are falling
And Your waves of grace
Are washing over me
Now I see
The walls I've built are falling
And Your waves of grace
Are washing over me

2.  My hearts been hard
I have been blind
To have often worked so hard
To keep You from my mind
I have ruled my life
A palace built on sand
But I want You to reign
Lord take me by the hand  CHORUS

3.  Lord please reign
In ev'ry heart
I give my life to You
I give you every part
I want to be like You
I want to seek Your face
Oh Lord please wash me
In Your awesome waves of grace CHORUS

Baptism of Tayton Haberstock
P     In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C    Amen.

P     Our Lord commanded Baptism, saying to his disciples in the last chapter of Matthew: All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.  And surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the age.
         The holy apostles of the Lord have written: The promise is for you and your children, and: Baptism now saves you.
         We also learn from the Word of God that we all are conceived and born sinful and so are in need of forgiveness.  We would be lost forever unless delivered from sin, death, and everlasting condemnation. But the Father of all mercy and grace has sent his Son Jesus Christ, who atoned for the sin of the whole world that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
The minister turns to the candidate to be baptizedP      Receive the sign of the holy cross both upon your forehead T and upon your heart T to mark you as one redeemed by Christ the crucified.

For the baptism of infants and young childrenP      Hear how our Lord Jesus Christ has opened the kingdom of God to little children.
         People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them.  When Jesus saw this, he was indignant.  He said to them, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.  I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.
P      This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C     Praise to you, O Christ.
For the baptism of infants and young children the minister addresses the sponsorsP      It is your task as the sponsor to confess with the whole Church the faith in our God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, in whose name this child is to be baptized.
         After this child has been baptized you are at all times to remember him in your prayers, put him in mind of his Baptism, and as much as in you lies, give your counsel and aid, especially if he should lose his parents, that he be brought up in the true knowledge and worship of God and be taught the Ten Commandments, the creed, and the Lord’s Prayer; and that as he grows in years, you place in his hands the Holy Scriptures, bring him to the services of God’s house, and provide for his further instruction in the Christian faith, that he come to the Sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood and thus, abiding in his baptismal grace and in communion with the Church, he may grow up to lead a godly life to the praise and honor of Jesus Christ.

P      This then, you intend gladly and willingly to do?
Sponsor:  Yes
Sponsors:Yes
P      God enable you to will and to do this faithful and loving work and with his grace fulfill what we are unable to do.
P      In order to implore the blessing of our Lord Jesus Christ upon the gathering of this child into the family of our Father, let us with all the family pray the prayer he gave us.
        Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,
          thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in    heaven.
        Give us this day our daily bread;
          and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
           and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
        For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
P      The Lord preserve your coming in and your going out from this time forth and even forevermore.
C     Amen.
For the baptism of infants and young children the minister saysP     Because this child cannot answer for himself, we shall all, together with sponsor and parents, faithfully speak on his behalf in testimony of the forgiveness of sin and the birth of the life of faith which God our Father bestows in and through Baptism.
P     Do you renounce the devil and all his works and all his ways?
C    I do renounce them.
P     Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty?
C    Yes, I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

P     Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son?
Pastor:Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son?C    Yes, I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord
        Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
        born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
        was crucified, died and was buried.
        He descended into hell.
        The third day he rose again from the dead,
        He ascended into heaven
        and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty.
        From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.

P     Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?
C    Yes, I believe in the holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church,
        the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
        the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

P     Who brings this child to be baptized?
Parents:       We do.
P     How is this child to be named?
Parents:       ___________________________
Parents:___________________________
P     Tayton Haberstock, I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit T
C    Amen

P     Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given you the new birth of water and of the Spirit and has forgiven you all your sins, strengthen you with his grace to life everlasting.  Peace be with you.
C     Amen
Giving the baptismal candle the minister says:
Receive this burning light.  Live always by the light of Christ, and be ever watchful for his coming that you may meet him with joy and enter with him to the marriage feast of the Lamb in his kingdom, which shall have no end.

P     Let us pray.
         Almighty and most merciful God and Father, we thank and praise you that you graciously preserve and enlarge your family and have granted Tayton the new birth in Holy Baptism and made him a member of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and an heir of your heavenly kingdom.  We humbly implore you that, as he has now become your child, you would keep him in his baptismal grace that according to all your good pleasure he may faithfully grow to lead a godly life to the praise and honor of your holy name and finally with all your saints obtain the promised inheritance in heaven; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C     Amen
P     Lord and giver of life, look with kindness upon the father and mother of this child and upon all our parents.  Let them ever rejoice in the gift you have given them.  Enable them to be teachers and examples of righteousness for their children.  Strengthen them in their own Baptism so that they may share eternally with their children the salvation you have given them; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
C     Amen.

Elder:    Through Baptism God has added Tayton Haberstock to his own people to declare the wonderful deeds of our Savior, who has called us out of darkness into his marvelous light.
C    We welcome you into the Lord’s family.  We receive you as a fellow member of the body of Christ, child of the same heavenly Father, to work with us in his kingdom.
P     And you, Tayton, the Lord bless you in all your ways from this time forth and even forevermore.
C    Amen

Salutation
P    The Lord be with you.
C    And also with you.

Prayer of the Day
P    Let us pray.

O God, You see that of ourselves we have no strength. By Your mighty power defend us from all adversities that may happen to the body and from all evil thoughts that may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C    Amen.
Old Testament Reading   Genesis 17:1–7, 15–16
1When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless, 2that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly.” 3Then Abram fell on his face. And God said to him, 4“Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. 5No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. 6I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you. 7And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.
15And God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. 16I will bless her, and moreover, I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.”
L    This is the Word of the Lord.
C    Thanks be to God.

Psalm  Psalm 22:23–31; antiphon: v. 22
P    I will tell of Your name to my brothers;
C    in the midst of the congregation I will praise You:
P    You who fear the Lord, praise Him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify Him,
and stand in awe of Him, all you offspring of Israel!
C    For He has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted,
and He has not hidden His face from him, but has heard, when he cried to Him.
P    From You comes my praise in the great congregation;
my vows I will perform before those who fear Him.
C    The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek Him shall praise the Lord!
May your hearts live forever!
P    All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations shall worship before You.
C    For kingship belongs to the Lord, and He rules over the nations.
P    All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
before Him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
even the one who could not keep himself alive.
C    Posterity shall serve Him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;
P    they shall come and proclaim His righteousness to a people yet unborn, that He has done it. I will tell of Your name to my brothers;
C    in the midst of the congregation I will praise You.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Epistle   Romans 5:1–11
1Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
6For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. 11More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
L    This is the Word of the Lord.
C    Thanks be to God.

Verse and Gradual  Hebrews 12:2; Mark 8:34b
P    O come, let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith,
C    who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame,
P    and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
C    If anyone would come after Me,
P    let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.

Holy Gospel   Mark 8:27–38

P    The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the eighth chapter.
C    Glory to You, O Lord.

27And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” 29And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” 30And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.
31And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
34And he called to him the crowd with his disciples and said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? 37For what can a man give in return for his life? 38For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
P    This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C    Praise to You, O Christ.

Sermon

Offering

Prayer of the Church
P    As God’s chosen ones, beloved sons and daughters of God, justified by faith and thereby at peace with God, let us pray for the Church, for the world, and for all people according to their needs.

For the Church throughout the world, that all sin and causes of offense may be cast out of our lives by the power of the cross, so that our hearts may be set to obey Your commandments. Let us pray to the Lord,
C    Lord, have mercy.

P    For people of every language and nation in the world, that all may be delivered from warfare, oppression, and violence, and live in the peace and safety God intends for His creatures. Let us pray to the Lord,
C    Lord, have mercy.
P    For those who serve in the armed forces of our nation, that they may defend the innocent, maintain justice, and establish peace. Comfort and guide the families of those who are deployed far away. By the death and resurrection of Your Son, reconcile us with our enemies that all may bear witness to Your power and peace. Let us pray to the Lord,
C    Lord, have mercy.

P    For those who are sick, facing surgery, or convalescing, [including . . .] that their sickness may be turned to health, and that they may experience the love of God through our care and concern. Let us pray to the Lord,
C    Lord, have mercy.

P    For all who travel, whether for business or pleasure, that their journeys may be safe. Let us pray to the Lord,
C    Lord, have mercy.

P    For guests in worship today, that Christ bless their hearing of the Word with faith, understanding, and joy. Let us pray to the Lord,
C    Lord, have mercy.

P    For the people of this congregation, that we make the good confession with our lips that Jesus is the Christ and also take up our cross to show the love of God with our lives. Let us pray to the Lord,
C    Lord, have mercy.

P    For those who have gone before us in faith and have died, [especially . . .] we give thanks. When our days on earth come to a close, bring us to that place of never-ending praise, worship, and thanks to You in heavenly splendor. Let us pray to the Lord,
C    Lord, have mercy.

P    Justified by faith, at peace with God, and called to take up our cross and follow Jesus, we entrust our prayers to the triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
C    Amen.
Benediction
P    In the cross of Jesus, you have been reconciled to God. You have peace with God through Jesus Christ. You are peace-filled and called to take up your cross and follow Jesus.

The Lord bless you and keep you;
The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you;
The Lord look upon you with favor and
T give you peace.
C    Amen.
